Protect the coolant and your investment. When a machine is idled for an extensive period of time, proper preparation and maintenance can help keep the machine and fluid in good working condition.

Here’s a checklist of best practices:

1. Skim/remove the tramp oil from the sump

2. Cycle the fluid and filter out the chips/fines

3. Clean the filters and coalescers

4. Clear all of the chips/fines from inside of the machine and conveyors

5. Spray the interior walls and corners of your machine using a spray-bottle of clean/fresh diluted coolant to wash down any of the dirt and oil

6. Disconnect and drain any coolant from the hoses that draw from the sump

7. Remember to leave the machine doors open to let the water evaporate. This will help keep the machine dry. When the water from the coolant evaporates, the coolant then offers corrosion protection for the machine

8. Scoop any of the chips/fines at the bottom of the sump if possible. Iron or steel chips/fines can act as catalyst by promoting lower pH which compromises the fluid

9. Keep the coolant concentration at the high end of the required/recommended concentration

10. Keep the sump cover closed if possible

11. Circulate the fluid for 15 minutes each week, or as often as you can manage to keep the fluid aerated. This will prevent the aerobic bacteria from growing (sump odor). You could also install an
oxygenator into the sump (especially large sumps) and let it run as often as can be managed
